anesthesiology-services

The mission of the Montefiore Health System Department of Anesthesiology is to advance medicine and surgery through equitable, evidence-based, and patient-centered care. The Department of Anesthesiology is an innovative team of physicians, CRNAs, and trainees who work collaboratively with all providers involved in the perioperative period and develop individualized treatment plans for our patients. We utilize research and data to inform our patient care and are leaders in creating systemic changes throughout our hospitals to improve patient safety.

Cardiothoracic Anesthesia

Our Cardiothoracic Anesthesiologists proudly deliver high-level perioperative care for a diverse population undergoing complex cardiothoracic and leading-edge structural heart procedures. Driven by evidence-based medicine, our group of fellowship-trained faculty utilize the most advanced equipment and techniques to continually improve patient outcomes. All of our cardiothoracic anesthesiologists are board-certified echocardiographers and provide advanced imaging guidance for a variety of cardiac operations and transcutaneous procedures. Led by our Division Chief, Dr. Jonathan Leff, and in partnership with the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Division of Cardiology, we work to deliver compassionate and comprehensive patient-centric care at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care.

Critical Care Anesthesiology

Our Critical Care physicians provide world-class surgical critical care medicine to our patients, working alongside board-certified surgical colleagues. Our Critical Care anesthesiologists conduct cutting-edge clinical research studies, many of which are supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on a range of topics including how to treat respiratory failure and COVID-19. Our Critical Care clinician-scientists have created a digital health database to improve the quality of our patient care and elevate our clinical research methods. Through the combination of our clinical practice and research, we are a world leader in the treatment and prevention of muscle weakness in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit through early rehabilitation.

General Anesthesiology

The General Anesthesia Division serves as the foundation of clinical services in the Department of Anesthesiology. The General Anesthesia team is composed of board-certified, experienced faculty who provide anesthesia services for a range of surgeries and procedures in the fields of Ambulatory Surgery, Bariatrics, Endoscopy, General Surgery, Gynecology, Opthamology, Orthopedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Oromaxillofacial, Plastics, Urology, Vascular, and Pediatrics. The division offers a Concierge Anesthesia Service, which guides patients through their operative experience with a personalized approach. Our General Anesthesia Division is committed to equity and incorporates a lens of diversity and inclusion in our training and practice. We host a unique Advanced Airway Fellowship, which trains one physician each year to become an expert in complex airway management.

Neuroanesthesia

The Division of Neuroanesthesiology provides high-quality perioperative care for our patients with neurological diseases undergoing treatments in the operating room, interventional radiology suite, and intensive care unit. Our Neuroanesthesia team is an integral part of Montefiore’s Stern Stroke Center and utilizes the latest intra-operative neurophysiological monitoring and anesthetic techniques for patients who have experienced acute stroke and other neurological conditions. Our neuroanesthesiologists work closely with members of the departments of neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, and orthopedic spine surgery to provide advanced and innovative care with a multidisciplinary approach to ensure optimal outcomes for our patients.

Obstetric Anesthesia

Montefiore's 24-hour obstetric anesthesiologists are key members of the labor and delivery teams, providing anesthesia for cesarean deliveries and pain relief during and after labor. A designated Accreta Center, Montefiore provides a full range of obstetric and gynecological services including specialized care in high-risk obstetrics. Our obstetric anesthesiologists work closely with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health, especially the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine to ensure expectant mothers with high-risk conditions receive complete, multidisciplinary care. Members of our Obstetric Anesthesia team conduct research on anesthetic management for parturients to continue to expand our knowledge of the most effective individualized treatment plans for our patients.

Multidisciplinary Pain Management Program

The Montefiore Multidisciplinary Pain Program (MMPP) at the Hutchinson Campus offers chronic pain management evaluation and treatment in a state-of-the-art facility. We strive to provide compassionate and multidisciplinary care to treat patients with many types of chronic pain including, but not limited to, arthritis, neck pain, back pain, coccydynia, complex regional pain syndrome, post-incisional pain, and post-amputation pain. Our treatment plans focus on non-opiate and other safe, minimally invasive techniques to alleviate our patients’ pain and improve their quality of life. In collaboration with the Montefiore Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, we train the next generation of Pain Medicine physicians through Montefiore’s PMR Pain Medicine Fellowship Program, which is the largest ACGME-accredited PMR Pain program in the country with 6 fellows. Our anesthesiologists are also involved in several clinical trials including the National Institutes of Health Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) Initiative, which works to advance non-addictive treatments for pain.

Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine

The Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Division provides comprehensive pre-, intra-and post-operative pain management for our surgical patients using a combination of regional anesthesia techniques and multimodal therapies. The RAPM Division is an integral part of Montefiore’s Joint Replacement Center and played a crucial role in the center receiving the Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification for Total Hip & Total Knee Replacement. Our team is nationally recognized in RAPM education and regularly conducts research in the use of nerve blocks and perioperative pain management to improve patient outcomes. One of our newest initiatives is to provide patients with regional anesthesia catheters, which patients can take home to minimize postoperative pain after ambulatory surgery. The cornerstone of our educational program is our Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship, which was among the first accredited in the nation and has grown to six positions annually since its inception.

Transplant Anesthesia

The Transplant Anesthesia team provides state-of-the-art care in pediatric and adult kidney, pancreas, liver, lung, and heart transplantation for adult and pediatric patients at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation, a Center of Excellence. The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore was one of the first in the nation to establish a pediatric transplant program, and Montefiore’s Liver Transplant Program has the best one-year post-transplant survival rate in the country. The Division of Transplant Anesthesia works in partnership with our transplant surgical colleagues throughout the perioperative period to ensure the highest quality of care for our patients undergoing transplantation surgery. Our transplant anesthesiologists also work on multicenter clinical trials with a focus on organ preservation and machine perfusion so we can continue to progress the field of transplantation.

Pediatric Anesthesia

Established in 2001, the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) has been consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the leading hospitals in children's care. Our team of pediatric anesthesiologists is committed to ensuring superior pre-, peri- and postoperative anesthesia care for children of all ages, from neonates to adolescents. In addition to providing expert clinical care, the physician scientists in the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology at CHAM investigate a wide range of clinical research topics related to anesthesia and anesthesia outcomes in children.

Endoscopic and Advanced Endoscopic Anesthesia

Montefiore’s Endoscopic and Advanced Endoscopic Anesthesia Division includes Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Services, Advanced Pulmonary Endoscopic Services, and Pre-Bariatric Surgery Service. Our Endoscopic Anesthesia Service is a highly dynamic service that works in partnership with the Department of Medicine’s Division of Gastroenterology & Liver Diseases and the Division of Pulmonary Medicine to ensure each patient is cared for through a multidisciplinary lense. One of our top executive goals for this year is to ensure that patients with complex diseases who need an endoscopy for treatment and hospital discharge receive their diagnostic procedures as soon as reasonably possible.
