Caring for High-Risk Heart Conditions

High-risk patients with diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure can reduce their risk of heart disease or heart attacks by adopting a healthier lifestyle and getting regular checkups, according to the American Heart Association. Our cardiologists meet with high-risk patients to determine their current heart health and identify the number and severity of any risk factors.

We offer a full profile of diagnostic testing in our on-site nuclear and echocardiography laboratories. Diagnostic testing also includes pacemaker checks and international normalized ratio (INR) tests, which check the heart's ability to clot blood when a patient is taking an anticoagulant like Coumadin.

Although most echocardiogram or echocardiogram stress tests are performed on site by our physicians, in some more complex cases, the physician may consult with an electrophysiologist, who is best equipped to assess the overall rhythm and weakness in different parts of the heart.

An electrophysiologist can determine whether a patient needs additional testing such as an MRI, or cardiac magnetic resonance, and can evaluate whether pacemaker transplantation or another surgical procedure is the most effective treatment.

All patients must schedule a consultation with a cardiologist prior to any diagnostic testing unless they are regular patients undergoing a routine exam.

Cardiac Clearance Before Surgery

Tarrytown Cardiology Associates eases the stress of heart surgery by bringing Montefiore Medical Center's top cardiothoracic surgeons to our patients. Our most experienced cardiothoracic surgeons, as part of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care surgical team, provide consultations to heart patients to discuss surgical and nonsurgical options for treating cardiac disease. Our surgeons will discuss the patient's heart condition, the treatment options and the recommended surgical procedure.

During the cardiac clearance, our physicians will evaluate the patient's risk factors for coronary heart disease and his or her health status. A physical examination, which may include an electrocardiogram (EKG) or stress test, is performed to determine the patient's risk of cardiac complications during surgery.

We require clearance for surgery to ensure our patients are educated about their illness and encourage them to make informed decisions about their treatment. All patients consult a cardiologist and cardiac surgeon before undergoing any medical procedures at the Center.
