Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care – Vascular and Endovascular Surgery - Varicose Veins - New York

Varicose veins are superficial (close to the skin) veins that becoame dilated (large) over time. These may cause symptoms such as pain, fatigue, and a feeling of heaviness, or they may be asymptomatic. In more severe and longstanding cases patients may develop ulcers, especially in the ankle area as a result of chronic venous insufficiency. In a majority of patients, conservative treatment with compression stockings will alleviate symptoms.

Advanced Treatment Options

Some patients may benefit from removal or elimination of these dilated veins. We offer both traditional and minimally invasive treatments for patients with varicose veins. Most patients can be treated using endovenous radio frequency ablation. This new catheter-based approach uses energy to ablate vein tissue and close off the symptomatic veins. This minimally invasive method is faster and less painful than traditional surgical stripping of distended veins - with results that are equally successful and more attractive. In severe cases traditional open ligation and stripping of the veins will provide relief of symptoms and allow for healing of ulcers when present.
