Dr. Katie Weichman is the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program Director for Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein School of Medicine. She is also the Director of Breast Reconstruction Services for Montefiore Medical Center and is Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery. She specializes in complex microsurgical reconstruction and general reconstructive surgery.

Prior to joining Montefiore Medical Center, Dr. Weichman received her medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine. She undertook general surgery and plastic surgery training at New York University Medical Center and is board certified in both specialties. She then completed a microvascular and oncological reconstruction fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Dr. Weichman’s clinical interest include breast reconstruction (autologous and implant based), surgical management of lymphedema, lower extremity salvage/reconstruction, and ventral hernia repair. She specializes in microvascular surgery and offers a wide variety of procedures to her patients including donor site sparing perforator flaps. She performs Deep Inferior Epigastric Artery Perforator (DIEP) flaps, Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery (SIEA) flaps, Profunda Artery Perforator (PAP) flaps, Transverse and Diagonal Upper Gracilis (TUG and DUG) flaps, and Gluteal Artery Perforator (GAP) flaps for complete breast reconstruction. She additionally performs partial breast reconstruction for patients undergoing lumpectomy including; oncoplastic reductions, Thoracodorsal Artery Perforator (TDAP) flaps, and Intercostal Artery Perforator (ICAP) flaps. She also, collaborates with the Breast Surgery Service to prevent postoperative lymphedema through reverse lymph node mapping techniques and offers surgical treatment of lymphedema including vascularized lymph node transfers and lymphovenous bypass.

Clinical research is a large concentration of Dr. Weichman’s practice. She centers her research efforts on comparative effectiveness, shared decision making, and patient reported outcomes. She has authored numerous peer reviewed publications and through grant funding by the Plastic Surgery Foundation, worked in collaboration with researchers at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Research to develop a pictorial based decision aid for breast reconstruction called the Picture Option Grid.
