Fernando J. Camacho, MD, has over 30 years of experience in community oncology and currently serves as the Director of the Community Oncology Section of Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care. This program was established to increase access to preventative and cutting-edge cancer care and research to Bronx and Westchester patients and families, particularly those from medically underserved communities, and enhance visibility of the Center for Cancer Care through education, outreach and community engagement.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Camacho was the founding partner of a private community-based medical oncology practice with 5 physicians at two sites, providing in-patient consultations at hospitals affiliated with The New York City Research and Improvement Networking Group, which includes Montefiore and St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers. This group is the only practice-based research network in the United States focused exclusively on serving and providing care to the urban underserved.
Dr. Camacho began his career in 1979 as a full-time medical oncology faculty member and Chief of Clinical Research at Montefiore. He received his Medical degree in 1973 from State University of New York at Buffalo and later pursued fellowships in Hematology at Montefiore, and in Oncology and Immunology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Camacho has been recognized for services on behalf of the Black and Latino Students by The Student National Medical Association. He currently sits on the Board of Director of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), and belongs to several medical organizations, such as The American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology and The Bronx County Medical Society. In 2007 he was honored with the Great Mentor in Medicine Award for inspiring minority students to succeed in the health professions. He has been recognized on numerous occasions by Castle Connolly Medical LTD as a New York Metro Top Doctor.
