Additional Funding Priorities
The Division of Adolescent Medicine at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center have developed the Bronx Nutrition and Fitness Initiative for Teens (“B'N Fit”) program to address the issue of adolescent obesity. The B'N Fit program offers teens a comprehensive medical, nutritional, psychosocial and home evaluation. Young people between the ages of 12 and 21 are enrolled in an intensive 12 week program followed by a weekly maintenance program.
The Center for Aging and Independence at Montefiore Medical Center provides a range of services that focus on the unique health care needs of older adults. Instead of offering fragmented care by multiple health care professionals, teams work collaboratively to manage complex conditions and medications, assess social supports, and assist patients and families in arranging appropriate and compassionate care. Interns, residents and fellows who study and work at Montefiore are trained to practice in this ideal geriatrics service model.
The Fragile Newborn Developmental Care Fund was established in 2002 to support family-centered care and help provide developmentally appropriate care to the babies treated in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU). As the only regional perinatal center in the Bronx, we care for more than 900 babies a year in our NICUs. Supporting the Fragile Newborn Developmental Care Fund is a wonderful way to remember or honor someone you love, or to thank the NICU staff. Donations to the Fragile Newborn Developmental Care Fund help provide for the ongoing needs in our NICUs. Your donations help the staff provide the best care and help make life better for the babies and families.
With more than 35,000 visits annually, the Institute for Human Communications is one of the largest programs in the region that provides comprehensive care for hearing deficits or problems of speech, language or voice. For the profoundly deaf, Montefiore is the only medical center in the Bronx and Westchester County that performs complex surgeries known as cochlear implants. Underwriting is needed for a number of specific scientific and clinical research activities.
In a separate facility from CHAM, a compassionate and specially trained staff provides emergency care and support to young victims of abuse or neglect and counseling to their families. Butler Center is the New York area's only certified medically based child advocacy center. We offer families one-stop care that helps children heal after neglect, battery and sexual abuse.
OB/GYN & Women’s Health
For more than four decades, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at Montefiore Medical Center has been at the forefront of women's healthcare. We provide a full range of services at more than 20 convenient locations in the Bronx and Westchester County, responding to the physical, reproductive and mental health needs of women at all stages of life.
Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program
Child Life Specialists provide emotional and psychological support to recovering children and adolescents. The staff of the Phoebe Stein Child Life Program familiarizes young patients with hospital surroundings, informing them about their illness and treatment in an age-appropriate manner. Child Life Specialists also structure therapeutic recreation programs in art, music and writing.
Suzanne Pincus Family Learning Place
The Suzanne Pincus Family Learning Place, located in the CHAM lobby, offers consumer health information through printed and audiovisual materials and Internet resources. It is staffed by knowledgeable health educators who also provide links to support groups and community services.
