Kara L. Watts, MD, Assistant Professor of Urology, joined the urology faculty at Montefiore in 2016. Dr. Watts earned her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in 2010 and subsequently completed her 6-year residency training in surgery and urology at Montefiore Medical Center.
As Dr. Watts launches her general urology practice at Montefiore, she is also focusing on advances in technology that will improve the diagnosis of prostate cancer. She is leading a department-wide initiative to implement the UroNav, a platform for MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsy of the prostate, to more accurately detect prostate cancer in men. Furthermore, she is working to develop protocols for risk stratification of men with newly diagnosed prostate cancer based on this technology, as well as programs for active surveillance of indolent prostate cancer and small renal masses. Lastly, she is pursuing her interest in focal therapy for prostate cancer.
Dr. Watts has numerous awards from her residency training. In 2013, she won an award for Clinical Research at the NY Section of the AUA Valentine Essay Contest. In 2016, she was the winner of the New York AUA Chief Resident Debate as well as the National AUA Chief Resident Debate in San Diego, CA. She has also presented her work on multiple occasions at the AUA annual conference, World Congress of Urology, and the Society for Pediatric Urology.
