Why our program could be right for you
The Montefiore Einstein Urology Residency Program offers its residents early operative experience, diverse research opportunities and broad exposure to a range of urologic conditions. Residents also have access to strong mentorship, and benefit from a positive culture that advocates doing what’s best for our patients, residents, faculty and staff.
Our faculty are enthusiastic about teaching, and continue to develop more interactive and engaging ways to teach our residents. Within the program, residents play a key role in caring for our patients and are important members of every care team. In this supportive environment, our residents become a close-knit group, training side-by-side in our facilities and exploring New York City in their free time.
Our 2024 program at a glance
5-year residency
- PGY1: 6 months urology + 6 months general surgery and subspecialties
- PGY2-5: urology
Call Schedule
- Primary call is split between PGY2 and PGY3. Full day off when post-call after primary call.
- PGY2: 1-2 nights primary call/week, 2 weekends/month
- PGY3: 0-1 nights primary call/0-2 backup call per week, 1 weekend/month primary
- PGY4:1-2 nights/week backup call, 1-2 weekend chief call/month
- PGY5: 1 weekend chief call/month
Didactics
- Every other Monday at 4:30 PM: multidisciplinary GU tumor board
- Wednesday 7-8 AM conference: dedicated educational time for AUA core curriculum/Campbell's chapters with faculty proctor. Year-long didactic program covering all of AUA core curriculum topics
- Friday 7-9 AM conference: grand rounds, guest speakers, AUA updates/guidelines, Morbidity and Mortality Conference ("M+M"), Indications
A challenging and innovative curriculum
Our Urology Residents get operative experience early, and quickly develop autonomy in evaluating and managing patients. Residents also receive a high volume of experience in subspecialties like endourology, urologic oncology, female pelvic reconstructive surgery, pediatric urology and male prosthetic surgery, as well as balanced exposure to various surgical approaches, including endoscopic, robotic and open surgery.
Breakdown of resident duties by level
Urology 1 (PGY1)
- Spend 6 months on General Surgery and 6 months on Urology
- General Surgery rotations include: Acute Care, Colorectal, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Surgical Oncology and Transplant
- Locations of rotations are at Weiler/Hutch, Moses and Jacobi (SICU)
Urology 2 (PGY2)
- Spend 4 months at Weiler, 2 months at Wakefield, 4 months at Moses, 2 months at CHAM
- Moses: busy consult service, where you learn basic of managing consults in setting of complicated and complex medical patients
- Weiler: learn basics of Urologic surgery at Hutch (busy endoscopic service)
- Wakefield: learn basics of outpatient urology, participate in clinic and do outpatient procedures
Urology 3 (PGY3)
- Spend 6 months at Moses, 2 months at CHAM, 2 months at MSK, 2 months at Wakefield
- CHAM: Dedicated pediatrics resident, operate 4 days a week (Monday - Thursday) and clinic Friday, handle all pediatric consults/inpatients
- Moses: Learn basics of bedside assisting robotic cases, first introduction on Robot; complicated endoscopic cases (TURP, TURBT, complex stones)
- Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) - spend 2 months learning advanced oncology at a high volume referral center
Urology 4 (PGY4)
- Year is split between Weiler and Hutch
- Complex stones (PCNL's), robotic experience at Weiler, master bread and butter Urologic procedures
- Begin to take Chief call
Urology 5 (PGY5)
- Chief Year
- 6 months at Moses and 6 months at Weiler
- Master Robotic procedures, open oncologic procedures

Graduate Medical Education at Montefiore Einstein
Representing one of the top 10 largest medical and surgical training programs in the country, Montefiore Health System and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine provide postgraduate clinical training to more than 1,400 residents and fellows per year. Clinicians across Montefiore Einstein’s numerous educational programs actively mentor and cultivate a new generation of healthcare leaders.
Our mission to improve access and quality of care for our diverse community draws residents and fellows from top medical, dental and PA schools from around the world. We develop and expand programs designed to advance teamwork, communication and decision-making, and our progressive focus on comprehensive care provides an ideal training ground for our residents and fellows.
To make the process of working and training at Montefiore Einstein more seamless, we offer a variety of services for our house staff, physician assistants and interns, including assistance with credentialing and orientation, institutional resources, visas, contracts, HR documents, payroll, notary services and specialty training and certifications.

Home to notable programs and our Centers of Excellence
Located in the Norwood neighborhood of the northern Bronx and featuring 726 beds, the Moses Campus is the main campus of Montefiore Health System. The majority of our oncology and robotic cases—such as radical and simple prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy and cystectomy—as well as reconstructive cases, including ureteral reimplantation and sacrocolpopexy, are performed at this location, which is equipped with multiple da Vinci Xi robots with dual consoles.
A premier academic children’s hospital
Located on our Moses Campus, the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is a premier academic children’s hospital nationally renowned for its clinical excellence, innovative research and commitment to training the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. At this location, we have three full-time urologists who perform simple and complex pediatric surgery, including robotic surgery.
An extremely diverse faculty with a broad range of clinical subspecialties allows residents to gravitate toward whatever they are interested in, and our number of ambulatory urology cases prepares one well for a general urology career.

Urology Resident (PGY-5)
An academic hospital adjacent to our Albert Einstein College of Medicine
A private hospital featuring 421 beds, the Jack D. Weiler Hospital is located in the Pelham Parkway section of the Bronx, adjacent to our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Complex open and robotic oncology, complex stone (PCNL) cases and endoscopic cases (TURP, complex TURBT) are performed at this location, which has two da Vinci Xi robots.
Offering patients a range of programs and specialty services
Montefiore Einstein Hospital, Wakefield Campus is a 321-bed hospital in North Central Bronx. During their rotations, PGY1 and PGY2 residents gain early outpatient exposure to general urology, including clinic-based procedures like cystoscopies, prostate biopsies and vasectomies as well as multiple operating room (OR) days each week for cases like transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) and ureteroscopies.
We are fortunate to train alongside faculty who are deeply committed to our development as surgeons, to provide exceptional care for our remarkable and appreciative patients, all while enjoying the camaraderie and laughter shared with our co-residents.

The Bronx, New York City’s northernmost borough, is a culturally rich neighborhood placed at the intersection of Manhattan and its surrounding regions. Our postgraduate trainees typically live in hospital housing or off-site in nearby Riverdale, Lower Westchester or Manhattan, and have access to an unmatched diversity of experiences beyond the program itself.
In the Bronx, with its ample parks and gardens, you’ll learn first-hand why it’s known as “the City’s Greenest Borough.” The neighborhood offers plenty of local food, art, sports and culture, and is just a subway ride away from Manhattan’s famed theaters, museums and attractions.
As a resident of the Tri-State region, you’ll have unmatched access to the city’s cultural offerings, not to mention the bounty of outdoor excursions that are available just beyond. Day-trips and weekend excursions to the Hudson Valley, Catskills, Long Island or New Jersey provide ample opportunities for swimming, hiking, biking, skiing and other seasonal activities.
