Founded in 1983, the highly regarded geriatrics fellowship program at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center is one of the oldest in the country and has trained more than 90 fellows - a generation of clinicians, academicians and national leaders in the field. The Montefiore-Einstein Geriatrics Fellowship Program is ACGME-accredited and offers five positions in a comprehensive one-year program, preparing trainees for careers as educators as well as clinicians across all care settings.
An advanced fellowship training program requires additional years of research training and is available for qualified applicants via an NIH training grant and other programs. All clinical training occurs at Montefiore Medical Center, the university hospital for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, one of the nation's leading academic medical centers. The Geriatrics Division's faculty include 13 full-time board certified physicians as well as specialists in geriatric nursing and social work. The fellowship program is renowned for the quality and depth of clinical teaching across its inpatient service, sub-acute care, long-term care, ambulatory care and home visiting services.
The Geriatrics Fellowship program comprises rotations in geriatric primary and consultative inpatient care including a hip-fracture consultation service, and sub-acute care, urology, orthopedics, neurological rehabilitation, urogynecology and palliative care. Continuity care throughout fellowship training is required in ambulatory practice, long term care and home visiting. In addition to clinical training, there is an extensive schedule of didactic seminars, multidisciplinary conferences, case conferences and journal clubs. To further enrich their training experience, fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in clinical, health services or basic or aging-related research and routinely present their work at national geriatrics meetings during their fellowship year.
