The Residency Program in Social Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center is one of the oldest and most successful primary care training programs in the nation, dedicated to training medical professionals for practice in underserved communities.
Ours is the only program in the country to offer three program tracks: Family Medicine, Social Internal Medicine and Social Pediatrics.
The Family Medicine program is a developmental curriculum that combines behavioral science, social medicine and community involvement. Residents practice at two Montefiore Medical Group sites, located in neighborhoods in the mid- and northeast Bronx, N.Y., which is comprised largely of immigrant and minority populations.
The goal of this track is to train family physicians to be prepared for meeting the needs of diverse, urban underserved patients and communities. The Residency Program in Primary Care and Social Internal Medicine trains general internists to provide care to marginalized and underserved populations, with a community-oriented focus. Residents work side-by-side with faculty at the Montefiore Comprehensive Health Care Center, a federally qualified community health center in the South Bronx.

Founded in 1970, the Residency Program in Social Pediatrics is an award-winning three-year residency program leading to board eligibility in pediatrics, designed to train pediatricians with a special interest in advocacy, community and public health, health policy and social justice. Residents receive in-patient training at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore and at the Comprehensive Healthcare Center in the South Bronx.
