Medical Student Clerkships

Medical school students applying for residency are encouraged to rotate through the Emergency Department. To that end, our program offers a four-week Emergency Medicine elective. This program allows students to experience firsthand the diverse and unique nature of our training program, the fast pace of busy urban EDs and the vast, complex pathologies of the populations we serve.

The experience includes exposure to:

  • The busiest trauma center in New York City
  • A high-volume cardiac referral center
  • An active ultrasound program
  • A lecture series designed specifically for students
  • EM residency conferences
  • Introductions to Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support
  • Pre-hospital care experience riding with paramedic ambulance units

Students will have primary patient care responsibilities—from doorway to diagnosis to disposition. An energetic, knowledgeable and enthusiastic group of faculty and residents will teach and guide them every step of the way. Students will also have the opportunity to attend daily resident conferences and case discussions, as well as a lecture and workshop series.

In addition to the Montefiore ED, students will rotate at Jacobi Medical Center, a Level 1 Trauma Center for both children and adults. Jacobi also houses the only Burn Unit in the Bronx, a Hyperbaric Medicine Program and a Snakebite Referral Center.
