What: Head and neck cancers – cancers that arise in the head or neck region, including the oral cavity, nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, mouth, salivary glands, throat, or larynx (voice box) – are the sixth most common form of cancer in the United States. Yet, despite the prevalence, many patients and the general public know little about risk factors, symptoms and treatment.

Montefiore Medical Center (@MontefioreNews) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine (@EinsteinMed) are co-hosting a twitter chat on head and neck cancer prevention, detection, research efforts and treatment, including the connection between smoking, drinking, HPV and head/neck cancer.

@EinsteinMed: Michael Prystowsky, M.D., Ph.D., is professor and chair of pathology at Montefiore and Einstein. His research focuses on genomic and proteomic analysis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Dr. Prystowsky developed a multidisciplinary group that includes surgery, oncology, pathology, molecular biology, protein chemistry, systems biology, epidemiology and biostatistics to study the molecular mechanism regulating tumor behavior.

@MontefioreNews: Richard Smith, M.D., is professor and vice chair of clinical otorhinolaryngology - head & neck surgery at Montefiore and Einstein. He is a recipient of the Byers Award for the best clinical research from the American Head and Neck Society and the Honor Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is also actively involved in numerous research projects studying cancers of the head and neck and is co-director of the Upper Aerodigestive Tract Research group at Einstein.
