Ceremony Marked Dr. Foreman's 20 Years of Leadership in Healthcare at Montefiore
New York City, NY (September 18, 2006) — In honor of Spencer Foreman, MD, president of Montefiore Medical Center, The Spencer Foreman, M.D. Pavilion was dedicated on Sunday, September 17, 2006. The ceremony celebrated Dr. Foreman's 20 years of leadership in healthcare at Montefiore. This is an unprecedented honor since Dr. Foreman continues in his key role as president of the medical center.
Under Dr. Foreman's innovative direction, Montefiore Medical Center transformed into a thriving academic medical center and integrated delivery system that serves the 1.4 million people of the Bronx, and many more from across the region, the United States and the world. In addition, under Dr. Foreman's stewardship, Montefiore now ranks among the top one percent of all U.S. hospitals, based on its investments in medical innovation and cutting-edge technology.
"Through our integrated network of primary, specialty, emergency, hospital and home care, our growth has been exponential, and we have stayed close to our historical roots as a force for community betterment, creating every variety of social programs and community redevelopment," Dr. Foreman commented. "In so many ways, Montefiore is a model health system for much of urban America."
"Dr. Foreman has a tremendous grasp of the hospital business and he has the insight to determine a strategy for the hospital, which has really put us in the forefront as a great part of our success," added Jay Langner, the hospital's chairman of the Board of Trustees.
"The hallmark of Spike Foreman's career as a physician and executive has been his innate understanding of a hospital's deeper role in its community," said Dick Davidson, president of the American Hospital Association. "The organizations he has led not only have excelled at their mission of medical care; they have been leaders at changing and bettering the lives of the people in the communities around them. Many leaders work within the limitations of what they can accomplish. Spike Foreman is driven by the possibilities."
"Naming this facility after Dr. Foreman is a testament to the extraordinarily gifted leadership he has demonstrated since coming to Montefiore 20 years ago," said Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) president Kenneth E. Raske. "In addition to his remarkable work at Montefiore, Dr. Foreman has been of enormous importance to GNYHA in formulating new and innovative programs for the health care delivery system, benefiting all New Yorkers for decades to come."
The eight-story Spencer Foreman, M.D. Pavilion includes a completely redesigned entranceway and lobby area and encompasses Montefiore's surgical suites, patient rooms, laboratories and the hospital's Cherkasky Auditorium and medical library.
A hospital and health systems chief executive for more than 30 years, Dr. Foreman was president of Sinai Hospital of Baltimore (Maryland) and director of the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital in Baltimore before coming to Montefiore in 1986. He graduated from Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pa. and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and is certified in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine. He is professor of medicine and professor of epidemiology and community health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
As past chairman of the Association of American Medical Colleges and a current member of its executive council, Dr. Foreman has served as a member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education and the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. He is a past member of the boards of trustees of the American Hospital Association and the Hospital Association of New York State and a member and past chairman of the Board of Governors of the Greater New York Hospital Association and the Board of Directors of the League of Voluntary Hospitals. He is chairman of the board of the Biomedical Research Alliance of New York. He served as a member of the U.S. Prospective Payment Assessment Commission. He is a member of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Chairman of the Board of Ursinus College.
