Last week, the city’s Department of Health released a report that shows the number of opioid deaths is the highest they've been in more than 20 years.

The report shows the statewide average was 39.4 deaths per 100,000 residents in 2021. In the Bronx, that number exceeded the average by more than 30 deaths.

Since the summer, state law requires medical providers to prescribe the nasal spray often referred to as Narcan to every patient taking opioids. It quickly reverses the affects of an opioid overdose.

"Everyone should have access and be trained to use this medicine. It's almost like a first aid thing," said Dr. Laila Khalid, of Montefiore Medical Center.

Dr. Khalid says naloxone kits can be obtained from community organizations and for purchase at many pharmacies across the city.
