The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at Moses Campus

The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Montefiore’s Moses Campus is an intensive one-year program of advanced clinical training, open to physicians who have completed a ACGME-accredited gastroenterology fellowship. Upon completion of training, fellows will be eligible for advanced UNOS certification in liver transplantation and board certification in transplant hepatology.

Fellows with the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Montefiore’s Moses Campus  receive a broad range of experience and exposure.  Program participants routinely participate in the diagnosis and management of patients with all forms of acute and chronic liver disease both on the inpatient hepatology service and consultations throughout the hospital.  

Program participants receive training through various clinical experiences, formal educational activities, and structured research opportunities. Participants learn:

• Patient selection and management.
• Operative procedures, and post-operative management, including immunosuppression.
• How to perform endoscopy on patients with liver disease, including endoscopic management of esophageal varices and percutaneous liver biopsies.
• Performance of percutaneous liver biopsies including knowledge of the appropriate indication for liver biopsy and interpretation of the histologic findings.

Education

Fellows with the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Montefiore’s Moses Campus  deliver academic lectures on topics of their own choosing and participate in academic conferences, including Journal Club, Pathology rounds, and Case Conferences.
Fellows also:

• Actively work with house staff and medical students to aid in their understanding of how to diagnose and manage liver diseases.
• Gain an understanding of imaging studies used in the diagnosis of liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma.
• Evaluate and manage patients in a  private office setting  at our Transplant Evaluation Clinic.
• Manage a panel of patients in the outpatient continuity clinic at our Hepatology clinic.
• Grow in their  understanding of end-of-life issues for patients with advanced liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma, including appropriate communication with the patient and family.
• Observe organ procurement and transplantation.

Research

Fellows with the Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Program at Montefiore’s Moses Campus  are encouraged to participate in research projects in conjunction with a faculty mentor and to present research at local and national meetings. The Montefiore Einstein Center for Transplantation is affiliated with Einstein’s Marion Bessin Liver Research Center, one of three NIDDK-funded liver-research centers in the United States, offering opportunities to participate in cutting edge translational research projects. 

Location

Located in a pleasant residential section of the North Bronx, Montefiore is close to the Westchester border and several major highways making it an easy commute from Manhattan, Westchester, Connecticut, Rockland and New Jersey.

Compensation and Benefits

Montefiore offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including four weeks of vacation and one funded conference week for fellows. Subsidized housing is available close to the Moses Campus and in Riverdale. Fellows also receive three meal cards each day—that can be used at our Moses and Einstein Campuses’ all food station.—and reduced rates for monthly parking.
