Hospital Design and Construction Projects

Department of Design and Construction, Montefiore Medical Center

Montefiore’s Department of Design and Construction spearheads capital projects and renovations designed to enhance the healing nature of the hospital environment. These initiatives promote well-being among patients, family members and associates by providing space and seating layouts that encourage visitation by family and friends, reducing stressors such as noise, glare and clutter; and offering beauty and positive distraction through nature and art.

These initiatives at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and Montefiore’s other campuses, help promote well-being among patients, family members and associates by reducing stressors such as noise, glare and clutter; connecting patients and associates to nature; offering beauty and positive distraction through visual art; and providing space and seating layouts that encourage visitation by family and friends.

All these elements are known to have an important effect on people’s feelings of wellness and ease in a physical environment.

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore

CHAM was specifically designed to provide a healing and aesthetic setting for pediatric care.

Architectural Record, the premier source for architectural design, modern architecture and green architecture, recounts how CHAM’s design:

“Reflects both the philosophies of ‘family-centered care’ and the teachings of Carl Sagan, stressing our connection to the larger whole of the universe and making the hospital a place where the journey is not only towards healing, but also knowledge.  Throughout the hospital, the child is the centerpiece and driving force behind the design. The concepts of journey and connection are explored on each floor using different themes and depicted through numerous art installations.  Local and nationally known artists were handpicked to develop each floor’s pieces around a specific idea geared either to the developmental level or illness treated on that floor.”
