STS Rating

Montefiore's renowned Cardiac Surgery Program at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care received the top rating—three-stars—from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for the third year in a row. Montefiore was one of only two programs in New York City to receive the three-star rating from the STS, putting it in the top tier of heart surgery centers in the United States. The STS rating was highlighted in a Consumer Reports cover story titled "The Business of Healing Hearts."

The Society , a nonprofit organization representing more than 6,000 surgeons, researchers and healthcare professionals worldwide, recently developed a comprehensive rating system that evaluates the quality of cardiac surgical procedures performed at hospitals across the country. Montefiore was ranked above the 90th percentile because of its strong performance in both quality and outcomes in coronary artery bypass graft surgery, as well as valve procedures.

Only 12 percent of hospitals nationwide achieved the distinction of a 3-star rating, which reflects the highest level of quality care delivered for cardiovascular surgical procedures.

"We are very pleased to be recognized by our colleagues in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons," said Robert E. Michler, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief, Co-Director of the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care, and Chairman, Departments of Surgery and Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery. "This ranking by the STS has far more impact than that of any other ranking agency since it is a rating analyzed and granted by those most knowledgeable to evaluate the quality of heart surgery. Receiving a 3-star rating illustrates that our approach to cardiovascular care is highly effective and reaffirms our position as a national leader in cardiovascular surgery."
