Evan Garfein, MD, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care, authored a new Bill requiring hospitals in New York to inform breast cancer patients of breast reconstruction options. This includes informing them about the availability of insurance coverage.
The law requires them to be informed about their options before they undergo "mastectomy surgery, lymph node dissection or a lumpectomy." Some women don't receive reconstruction because it wasn't offered to them and they didn't know to ask about it. It is this group that the legislation targets.
