Pathology

The Department of Pathology at Montefiore Medical Center is one of the largest and most comprehensive medical center laboratories on the East Coast. With a staff of more than 50 pathologists and doctoral researchers, our laboratories generate more than 10,000,000 laboratory test results, interpretations and diagnostic consultations each year.

As part of our multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, our Pathology Department is involved in clinical services and research. Our patients have access to many cancer services, including:

Anatomical Pathology

Anatomical pathology involves the removal of tissue during a surgical procedure, followed by diagnostics to detect cancer and establish which type is present.

Cancer Screening

Our pathologists conduct cancer screening in cooperation with clinicians, and include:

Cancer pathologists also sit on Tumor Boards for the collaborative care, planning and treatment of each patient.

Quicker Diagnosis, Faster Treatment

At Montefiore, we understand how stressful it can be to wait for your lab test results. Using an advanced software program developed by Tylis Chang, MD, we are better able to monitor the flow of information coming into all of our pathology labs. We can easily track appointment turnaround times, monitor performance, improve quality control, reduce medical errors and determine appropriate staffing needs for research studies. As a hospital committed to excellence, we are unwavering in our determination to deliver accurate results as quickly as possible.

Cancer Biology Research

Cross-campus pathology research programs between Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine are highly interactive and collaborative, focusing on:
