The Urologic Oncology Program at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care is dedicated to providing the most innovative and advanced cancer treatments to our patients. Our expertise encompasses all tumors of the genitourinary tract. The Program is one of the most comprehensive in the nation, offering treatment for the entire array of urologic cancers, including prostate, bladder, kidney, testicular, urethral and penile malignancies.
The program brings together a team of experts in medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology to ensure a multidisciplinary approach for each patient and the safest, most effective, customized treatment plan maximizing outcomes.
For cases that demand more rigorous intervention, such as malignancies of the prostate, Montefiore offers both radical prostatectomy and state-of-the-art robotic prostate surgery. Reza Ghavamian, MD, fellowship trained in urologic oncology, is one of the region's most experienced and high-volume surgeons specializing in robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy. He collaborates with Farhang Rabbani, MD, an expert in prostate and kidney cancers, with a focus on nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy and urologic oncology.
A robotic-assisted procedure can offer all the potential benefits of a minimally invasive procedure, including less pain and less need for blood transfusions. Even more important is the ability to preserve erectile function and urinary continence after prostate surgery. Moreover, robotic surgery can enable a shorter hospital stay, a quicker recovery and faster return to normal daily activities.
Our expertise in kidney and bladder cancer extends to innovative laparoscopic and robotic partial nephrectomy (nephron-sparing surgery)—removal of cancer by minimally invasive means, while preserving the kidney—to treat renal (kidney) cancer. This method is appropriate for many early stage kidney cancer patients and research indicates that it is as effective as removing the entire kidney.
In treating bladder cancer, Montefiore's highly specialized surgeons perform all possible open, laparoscopic and robotic surgical solutions. These include robotic radical cystectomy, as well as all forms of urinary diversions such as ileal conduit, catheterizable pouches and neobladders. Our state-of-the-art surgical treatments also include minimally invasive methods for testicular and penile cancers, as well as lymph node dissection.
