Montefiore in the News

April 22, 2021

After nearly 14 years as a housekeeper at Montefiore Medical Center, Abigail Huggins says the coronavirus pandemic is pushing her to continue pursuing her dreams.

After Huggins was infected with the coronavirus last April, she recovered and returned to her station at Montefiore’s Moses Campus.

While continuing to fight on the front lines, Huggins is now furthering her education after work to advance her career in health care.

“It’s an accomplishment for myself as well as an example for my son to follow, you know, never stop going after your dreams and that is one dream of mine -- to become a nurse,” said Huggins.

Huggins says she has seen a lot as a housekeeper at the center, but that last year was like no other.

“It was just so scary, there were a few times where I literally had to hit my chest to see if I was still breathing or if I was still alive because when you start seeing bodies rolling off the floor and I was just in that room two minutes ago, you know you start wondering, 'Will I be next?'” said Huggins.

She says he wants to step into the rooms at the center in a new role that lets her continue caring for patients.
