The President of Montefiore Medical Center, Spencer Foreman, MD, announced his intention to retire after more than 20 years of distinguished leadership of one of the most innovative and successfully managed academic medical centers in the world.
Dr. Foreman’s retirement is part of a planned leadership transition at Montefiore begun last year with the retirement of Montefiore’s long-time Board Chairman, Jay Langner, and the election of his successor, David Tanner.
A search committee is being formed, and the actual timing of Dr. Foreman’s retirement is dependent upon the selection of a successor.
“My decision to retire should come as no surprise. This is part of an orderly transition plan that any forward thinking institution makes,” Dr. Foreman said. “I have been fortunate enough to head a remarkable leadership team and outstanding medical staff and group of Montefiore Associates for over two decades. We have had a definite positive impact on the Bronx and surrounding communities. For that I am exceedingly proud,” he said.
"We accept Dr. Foreman's decision to retire with great sadness but with great appreciation for what he has accomplished over the past two decades. The task at hand is to move forward in a careful and expedient manner to find someone to build on Spike's extraordinary accomplishments at Montefiore," said David Tanner, Chairman of the Medical Center Board of Trustees.
"Montefiore plays a critical role in the community it serves and it is paramount that the commitment to medical excellence and care for vulnerable populations fostered by Spike and his team continue," Tanner said.
