A New Chapter in the Fight Against Cancer

Montefiore Offers Seamless and Efficient Care for Patients

(L to R) Shalom Kalnicki, MD; Beverly Michael, Vice President-Clinical Services; Steven Libutti, MD; Robert Michler, MD, Chairman, Departments of Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery; Steven M. Safyer, MD; Roman Perez-Soler, MD, Chairman, Medical Oncology; Allen M. Spiegel, MD, Dean, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and David Goldman, MD, Director, Albert Einstein Cancer Center, at the opening of the center.Patients diagnosed with cancer will be able to discuss individual treatment options and care plans with multidisciplinary teams of experts from the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care at a new facility that is the latest addition to Montefiore's network of cancer care services.

The Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care's new outpatient center at 1521 Jarret Place is an 8,200-square-foot facility where patients with cancer and their loved ones can discuss the patient's therapeutic options with disease and organ-specific clinical teams comprised of medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, as well as other subspecialists, social workers, nutritionists and research coordinators. This new outpatient site is adjacent to other Center for Cancer Care facilities such as the Center for Radiation Therapy and medical-oncology services at Montefiore Medical Park.

The Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care brings patients to the intersection of the cutting-edge cancer care and clinical research provided by Montefiore in partnership with the National Cancer Institute-designated Albert Einstein Cancer Center. Approximately 4,300 patients newly diagnosed with cancer are seen annually at the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care and the opening of the new outpatient center at Jarret Place provides significant capacity to treat more patients and increase the availability of important clinical trials to patients in our community. Teams at the new facility will focus not only on prevalent cancers such as breast, lung and prostate, but also on less common diagnoses such as neuroendocrine cancer, that do not benefit from large-scale, well-funded research efforts.

"Cancer care is a team effort that should be delivered across disciplines in a coordinated fashion, with the patient as the focal point," said Steven K. Libutti, MD, Vice Chairman, Department of Surgery and Director of the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Cancer Care. "Our goal is to transform cancer care by increasing the number of clinical trials that are available to all patients and by developing targeted therapies that more effectively strike tumor sites. The opening of this new outpatient facility will bring us that much closer to achieving our goal."
