A little rain didn't dampen spirits at the May 12th kick-off ceremony for Bronx Week 2010 held at the Madison Avenue Bridge in the South Bronx. Hosted by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr., the ceremony also observed the 100th anniversary of the bridge, which connects The Bronx and Manhattan.
Bronx Week is an annual celebration of the best of the Bronx — its beauty and culture, neighborhoods and residents. The week-long celebration is organized by the Bronx Tourism Council and the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, and sponsored primarily by Montefiore Medical Center and HealthPlus, in association with Con Edison, Affinity Health Plan, Verizon, Emblem Health, the Bronx CUNY Colleges, AmeriChoice, Citi, BronxNet, WBLS, Domino's Pizza, and the New York Daily News.
This year, each day of Bronx Week includes activities focused on health education and promotion and disease prevention. For example, a Walk-a-Thon for Good Health was part of the opening day festivities, and a Health Pavilion at the Grand Finale on Sunday, May 23 at Mosholu Parkway will feature dozens of health care organizations including Montefiore offering health screenings and educational materials.
"Montefiore Medical Center is once again delighted to be a principal sponsor of Bronx Week 2010," said Steven M. Safyer, MD, President and CEO, Montefiore Medical Center. "We are particularly pleased that Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. has put his support behind all the health promotion activities that will be occurring during the week. Each day of Bronx Week will include activities focused on health education and promotion. Montefiore is committed to strengthening our partnership with our Borough President to foster the health and well-being of Bronx residents."
The Grand Finale will also include a parade beginning at noon, where Montefiore will be among the sponsors leading over 80 Bronx schools, bands, floats and community organizations along Mosholu Parkway.
Roberto S. Garcia, Senior Director of Community Relations at Montefiore, spoke at the kick-off ceremonies. "As the largest employer in the Bronx, with over 17,000 associates working to improve the health of our residents, Montefiore Medical Center is delighted to support Bronx Week," Garcia said. "We believe a healthier Bronx is a stronger Bronx, and we will continue working with our Borough President to achieve that goal."
Bronx Week 2010 festivities will continue through Sunday, May 23, 2010. For the complete calendar of events, go to: http://www.ilovethebronx.com/?pg=load&loc=bronxweek&tab=calendar
