On March 31, 2005, US Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt and his team visited Montefiore to see first hand how a successful system-wide engagement of advanced technology helps improve medical outcomes for patients while increasing staff efficiencies and controlling healthcare costs. Secretary Leavitt said he specifically had wanted to visit Montefiore because of its national reputation for creative development of innovative technical support. It was his only hospital visit in New York City.
Montefiore's leadership in the development and enagement of technology is widely recognized. Montefiore has been ranked by the Leapfrog Group as among the top one percent of all US hospitals based on its investments in medical innovation and cutting-edge technology.
Secretary Leavitt was given demonstrations of the medical center's state-of-the-art technologies, including: our Clinical Information System, Computerized Physician Order Entry System, Emergency Room Tracking and Medical Record System and our one-of-a-kind Clinical Looking Glass disease management program that allows physicians to track various diseases by population and neighborhood. It is considered by many to be a system that will help define the future of preventive medicine.
"The intensity of interest in Montefiore's health information systems shown by Secretary Leavitt, the nation's top health official, clearly indicates that the development and deployment of sophisticated medical information systems is a top priority for this Administration," said Spencer Foreman, MD, president, Montefiore. "It is the way of the future for our national healthcare system."
The centerpiece of Montefiore's model network is its Clinical Information System (CIS), which makes possible continuous, lifelong medical records for our patients. The CIS includes a computerized physician order entry system, which allows physicians to order medications and tests directly by computer. It also has built-in prompts that help improve clinical care. Patients seen at any location in the Montefiore system have their medical records available on-line for any health professional involved in their care, at any time they are needed.
Montefiore also leads the industry in developing the systems necessary to manage care responsibly. Its Integrated Provider Association has 1,200 member physicians, including 300 primary care physicians. With the support of the Montefiore Contract Management Organization, it is able to accept full financial risk and now has complete responsibility for the care of more than 150,000 covered lives. These patients benefit from the use innovative disease management programs, which improve quality and access while managing utilization and costs.

We care about patients and their loved ones, so we attend to them and provide comfort and care for them as well. And we help them recuperate. It’s nice to see the relief in their faces. In fact, it’s wonderful.
