Intended Audience

This activity is intended for physicians and other health care professionals involved in the care and treatment of heart failure patients.

Statement of Need

Over 500,000 new cases of congestive heart failure are diagnosed in the United States each year. Medical and surgical therapies for heart failure are continuously evolving and offer many options to extend and improve life for patients.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this program, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify emerging mechanical assist devices
  • Discuss NYHA Class III patients who may benefit from advanced cardiac therapies
  • Recognize the relevant parameters of left ventricular geometry and function and identify patients that may benefit from surgical ventricular reconstruction
  • Recognize the deeper consequences of long term anti-coagulation and the incremental risk of stroke while patients are on anti-coagulation
  • Distinguish the risks and benefits of  percutaneous intervention versus surgical procedures in the treatment of atrial fibrillation
