JOIN MONTEFIORE’S EARTH DAY INITIATIVES

Montefiore is DOING MORE to expand our culture of sustainability and green initiatives in the week leading up to Earth Day on April 22. Our focus on environmental leadership spans over two decades and is embedded in everything we do from turning off a light to creating programs like our new “Greening the OR” to reduce excess waste in operating rooms and workflows.

This year Montefiore will participate with others around the globe in Unpower Hour, where we’ll minimize our power usage for a pre-designated hour. Join Montefiore’s 9th Annual Earth Day Expo and discover more about using eco-friendly products and services. You’ll find a full listing of Earth Day events on the intranet.

MONTEFIORE DOING MORE FOR CAREGIVERS

Montefiore’s Arthur D. Emil Caregiver Support Center (CSC) celebrates its 5-year anniversary this month. It was New York City’s first, and continues to be the only hospital-based resource to provide emotional support and practical assistance to caregivers.

The CSC’s most passionate advocates are caregivers themselves. Michael Burke is one, whose daughter came to Montefiore for a heart transplant, and he traveled from his home in Ireland to be with his daughter during her treatment. He found respite at the CSC during multiple extended stays at the hospital.

“WE WERE TOLD THAT MONTEFIORE IS THE BEST IN THE CITY,” MR. BURKE SAYS. “THE CSC IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. I DON’T THINK I COULD HAVE MADE IT WITHOUT THIS PLACE AND THESE PEOPLE. MY DAUGHTER WAS CERTAINLY PUT AT EASE KNOWING I WAS BEING TAKEN CARE OF.”

Montefiroe Doing More for Caregivers

The Center’s dedicated staff of social workers, program assistants and trained volunteers is on hand to listen to caregivers and connect them with resources. “The family is the unit of care,” says Randi L. Kaplan, LMSW, Director, Arthur D. Emil Caregiver Support Center. “Our Center was established so that family members would feel less alone. The Center provides an extra layer of support to the often times forgotten caregiver.”
