Surgery
Professional Training Programs

The general surgery residency program is sponsored by Montefiore Medical Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and is an ACGME accredited program that involves five years of clinical training. The residents rotate throughout five different hospitals: the Moses, Weiler and Children's Hospital campuses of Montefiore Medical Center, Jacobi Hospital and North Central Bronx Hospital. Together, these hospitals serve a diverse community of over 2 million people in a variety of settings, from a tertiary care center to a smaller city hospital to a Level 1 trauma center. All the hospitals are located within a few miles of each other, and easily accessible, served by the Medical Center's shuttle bus services.
We have an extensive attending faculty that is dedicated to the teaching and development of the surgical residents, as well as a newly revised curriculum that includes weekly conferences in both surgical and basic science topics. At the intersection of Einstein science and Montefiore medicine are Centers of Excellence in Cancer Care, Cardiovascular Services, the Children's Hospital, Transplantation and Neurosciences. In these centers, renowned investigators and multidisciplinary clinical teams collaborate to develop and deliver the advanced, innovative care available only at premier academic medical centers and the seamless continuum of services that ensures an ideal patient experience.

The goal of the program is not only to develop the operative and academic skills of the next generation of surgeons, but also to foster the independent reasoning that is the cornerstone of properly caring for patients. The residents are involved with all levels of surgical care both inside and outside of the operating room. They also gain experience as teaching faculty for the Albert Einstein medical students. Residents leave this program well trained and prepared for the next step in their career, whether it is in a subspecialty fellowship or in private practice as a general surgeon.
