Immunodiagnostic Lab

The Division of Rheumatology at Montefiore Medical Center offers rheumatology patients the unique benefit of early and expert diagnosis through our onsite immunodiagnostic laboratory. We are one of the few hospitals in the nation that is able to offer patients in-house diagnostic tests for rheumatic diseases. In addition, the lab helps patients with autoimmune gastrointestinal diseases (celiac disease, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis), renal disease (Goodpasture's syndrome), hematologic disease (pernicious anemia), and bone diseases (osteoporosis). This means that we can not only offer test results more quickly, but also allows us to specialize the tests we offer each patient and ensure that we are treating them with the best, specialized care available.

Our laboratory is headed by a nationally renowned rheumatologist who brings specialized expertise to bear on any tests that are administered in the lab. Our rheumatologists not only recommend, administer, and analyze test results, but also enhance the understanding of the other physicians in and out of the division by inviting them into the laboratory to learn how to administer and interpret tests. Such precise quality control and dedicated expertise sets us apart from other rheumatology clinics and allows us to offer outstanding care to all of our patients. The immunodiagnostic laboratory at Montefiore was the first hospital lab in NYC to test for anti-DNA, anti-Sm, anti-RNP and anti-CCP antibodies on a routine basis.

Because many rheumatic diseases are uncommon, we bring our specialized knowledge of the best diagnostic tests and treatment methods for diseases, such as lupus and osteoarthritis, to our patients and offer them expertise far beyond that of their primary care physician. Through accurate and early diagnosis and thorough, carefully administered follow up care, we are able to maximize their response to their treatment and vastly improve their health and quality of life.
