Rheumatology Clinics

The Rheumatology Clinics at Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Rheumatology are continually honing their specialized expertise by helping 3,000 to 4,000 people to avoid disability incurred through joint infirmity each year. Our expert and early diagnosis vastly improves our patients' health and quality of life. We then offer thorough follow up treatment and management of all aspects of care for those with the following conditions:

  • Lupus
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Soft tissue rheumatism
  • Osteoporosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Other rheumatic diseases

We support all of our patients throughout their care, in order to ensure that they are receiving the maximum benefit with the minimum side effects. When appropriate, we will adjust their medication several times, until we find the best treatment plan to help them achieve the utmost quality of life.

Specialized Arthritis Care

At our Arthritis Clinic, our specialized, expert care and knowledge of cutting edge arthritis treatments allows us to offer our patients the most advanced and effective medications and observe them for their response and for possible side effects associated with some medications. Our coordinated, long-ranging care program ensures maximum well being and includes referring patients to appropriate rehabilitation services.

When patients are being treated with arthritis, our goal is to:

  • Decrease pain
  • Improve function
  • Prevent disability

While striving to help our patients achieve these goals, we also aim to recommend the most appropriate treatment methods, in order to avoid over-medicating. We begin by confirming or making an initial diagnosis, and then assess a range of possible treatments, from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, to cutting-edge targeted biologic therapies.

Once a patient has been diagnosed with arthritis, we start with an initial medication plan to ensure that the patient can tolerate a specific medication. We carefully explain each medication's possible side effects and risks, as well as the expected benefits. We then adjust each patient's medication until they are feeling the best that they can possibly feel.

The one word that I would use to describe Montefiore Nurses is 'innovative.' They're constantly changing and constantly growing and Montefiore finds new ways to make things easier for the nurses. They embrace change and that is vital for us and the institution. [more]
