Rheumatology

The Division of Rheumatology at Montefiore Medical Center is a recognized leader in its field. Our preeminent staff of eight physicians and physician scientists takes the time to share our vast experience with our patients through careful, compassionate care. We offer improved quality of life for patients with a range of conditions, from lupus to arthritis, through our state-of-the-art treatment.

Specialized Care

Our rheumatology clinics see new and returning patients for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care of rheumatic diseases, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Vasculitis

Scientific evidence suggests that early treatment and diagnosis of certain rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, can maximize its effectiveness and prevent irreversible disabilities or joint infirmities. When patients are referred to us by their primary care physicians, we give them the reassurance of a prompt, accurate diagnosis.

Those who have more common and easily treated complaints, such as osteoarthritis, may be seen to confirm their diagnosis and return to their primary care physicians for follow up care after one or two visits to our clinic.

But patients diagnosed with less common conditions requiring specialized care, such as vasculitis (an inflammation of the blood vessels) or lupus, can benefit greatly from our dedicated care. Many of the medications used to treat rheumatic diseases are quite specialized and may cause a variety of side effects, and a primary care physician may not have the expertise to fully monitor patients who have been prescribed them. We pride ourselves in working closely with our patients to ensure that they are receiving the maximum benefit from their treatment, with the minimum side effects. We believe that open and thorough communication between physicians and patients is a sure means for providing the best care possible.

Whether we are taking over a patient's primary care, or simply offering a short term consultation, we begin by diagnosing them with a thorough work-up that includes:

  • X-rays
  • MRIs
  • Radiologic studies
  • Laboratory evaluation

Celebrated expertise

Our onsite immunodiagnostic lab allows us to return patients' test results very quickly, as opposed to those institutions that rely on outside labs. Our collaborative relationships with the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine means seamless care for our patients, should they require joint replacement surgery or other surgical interventions. Those patients who are diagnosed with lupus are referred for treatment to our specialized lupus clinic. Our ongoing clinical research and use of novel treatments for rheumatic diseases means that we are constantly expanding our expertise and ability to offer cutting edge diagnosis and treatment.
