Interventional Neuroradiology

Interventional neuroradiology is the specialty field of conducting minimally invasive procedures to treat neurological diseases. Thanks to critical breakthroughs in this radiological discipline, conditions such as aneurysms and tumors of the brain, spine and head and neck that required surgery in the past can now be considered for treatment using an endovascular approach.

The Department of Radiology at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine established a dedicated Interventional Neuroradiology section of the Division of Neuroradiology in the early 1990s. Dr. Allan Brook, who launched the Interventional Neuroradiology program, continues to lead the section and is nationally recognized for his pain management expertise. He was the first physician in the state of New York to perform vertebroplasty and has been at the forefront of building the largest interventional radiological pain management program on the east coast right here at Montefiore.

Special Interventional Neuroradiology Procedures

We provide treatment for the entire spectrum of neurovascular diseases (e.g. acute stroke, brain aneurysm, brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM), cavernous-carotid fistula (CCF), dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF), spinal AVM and spinal AVF, head and neck cancer, epistaxis and vasospasm). Unlike many other facilities, we also provide pain management care for back pain due to degenerative disease, trauma, tumor, sympathetic dystrophy and post-operative discomfort. We perform nerve root and fact blocks, epidural injections, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty and also place spinal stimulators and intrathecal pumps. Montefiore Medical Center is the only radiology facility placing spinal stimulators and intrathecal pumps percutaneously. These procedures take place in our state-of-the-art neurointerventional suite.

Other cutting-edge procedures we perform include: CT (CAT) and fluoroscopic-guided percutaneous biopsy and drainage, imaging-guided blood patch for headache management, brain aneurysm embolization treatment of cerebral and spinal AVMs and AVFs, carotid angioplasty and stenting, stenting of brain vessels for stroke and aneurysms, percutaneous vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty for vertebral fractures, temporary and permanent balloon occlusion of intracranial and brachiocephalic vessels, intracranial percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), thrombolysis and thrombectomies for stroke management, and treatment of congenital and acquired AVFs and congenital AVMs.
