Specialized Care

At the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center, we strive to diminish the negative impact of pulmonary disease and its related conditions through accurate, thorough diagnosis and treatment.

Specialized, individual care

Because patients come to us with a variety of concerns, from chronic cough to emphysema, we tailor their care to their individual circumstances and offer the best treatment that will impinge on their regular routine as little as possible. Our staff is committed to supporting our patients through difficult behavior modifications, such as weight loss or smoking cessation, which may be recommended as part of their care. And we consistently enhance the treatment options we provide, through close collaboration with other divisions and specialized care centers at Montefiore, as well as our dedication to ongoing research into groundbreaking diagnosis methods and treatments.

Groundbreaking research endeavors

We offer our patients cutting edge treatment options through a variety of specialized research endeavors. In cooperation with Montefiore's Sickle Cell Center, which conducts research through the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and day hospital services for sickle cell patients, we offer specialized care for patients with sickle cell lung disease. Our dedication to ongoing research includes participation in a new study looking at the benefits of using the same C.P.A.P. (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine used for sleep apnea patients for sickle cell patients in pain crisis, even those without overt respiratory problems. Early evidence suggests this treatment could shorten the duration of patients' pain crisis and drastically improve their quality of life.

Dedicated pulmonary care

Because one floor of the Department of Medicine's inpatient services is dedicated to pulmonary care, our patients who have undergone treatment for acute respiratory failure in our intensive care unit can continue receiving follow up care from many of the same doctors and nurses with whom they have already formed relationships. These highly trained staff members, including pulmonary nurses and pulmonologists, have particular expertise caring for acute respiratory problems, including asthma, pneumonia, and respiratory failure.

Accurate identification of difficult-to-diagnose conditions

For those patients with specialized needs, we also offer treatment for chronic cough at the Cough Center at our Weiler Division. Our particular expertise allows us to diagnosis possible causes for chronic cough, including asthma, postnasal drip, gastro esophageal reflux and smoking. We then support our patients as they begin their appropriate treatment and embark on any behavior modifications it may require.

Our vast experience in pulmonary care allows us to accurately diagnose many patients with symptoms, including shortness of breath and chest pain, that suggest a variety of conditions. Our multi-disciplinary approach means that, when appropriate, we collaborate with other divisions in order to provide our patients with the best care possible.
