Hepatobiliary Surgery

Hepatobiliary surgery at the Montefiore Comprehensive Liver Program encompasses treatment for the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder. Our dedicated team of international clinicians evaluates and manages virtually every complication of the liver and biliary tract, ranging from congenital abnormalities to complex cancers that may require surgery.

All hepatobiliary surgeons at the Liver Center are fellowship trained in liver surgery and transplantation. This high level of specialization draws patients from the New York metropolitan region and across the nation. In most cases, our surgical team works closely with other specialists at the Liver Center so that every possible treatment option is carefully evaluated.

This multidisciplinary approach minimizes unnecessary procedures and gives patients access to the state-of-the-art surgical expertise of the team at the Montefiore Comprehensive Liver Program. We employ all minimally invasive, cutting-edge surgical techniques, such as radiofrequency ablation (using heat energy) and chemoembolization of tumors.

It is important for successful outcomes that complex liver surgery is performed in specialized, high-volume liver centers with dedicated teams. In the Montefiore Comprehensive Liver Program operating room, the surgical team works with a team of dedicated liver anesthesiologists who have advanced training in liver surgery. Equipped with sophisticated technology, the operating room at the Liver Center features novel advancements not available at all medical centers. For example, some of these technologies are designed to minimize blood loss during liver surgery, which historically has been associated with significant risk. Now, most patients undergoing liver surgery do not require any blood transfusion, and many are discharged within days of their operation facing a shorter recovery than in years past.

After surgery, patients are admitted to a dedicated inpatient floor specially designed for recovery after hepatobiliary surgery procedures (North 7AE). Nursing staff, physician assistants, nutritionists and social workers on the inpatient care team are engaged full time in the care of liver patients.
