Chronic cough is a common and often extremely disruptive condition that can cause sleep deprivation, muscle fatigue and social anxiety. For years, little was known about the problem and little research was done.

Only cough center in New York State

The Cough Center at Montefiore Medical Center is leading the way in working to understand and cure chronic cough. Montefiore’s is the only cough center in New York State and one of only a few centers in the nation. We offer cough sufferers successful treatment in the hands of capable cough experts and, when required, other specialists too.

When we see a patient for the first time, we conduct a thorough health history and physical exam. As needed, patients are also referred for X-rays or CAT scan to arrive at an accurate diagnosis.

Our skilled staff typically looks first for one of three frequent causes of chronic cough, which account for up to 90 percent of all cases:

• Post-Nasal Drip

• Asthma

• Gastroesophageal Acid Reflux Disease (GERD)

In a small number of patients, chronic cough is caused by other, sometimes more serious conditions. With Montefiore’s broad array of skilled professionals, we can provide access to pulmonologists and other specialists for even more focused care.

Fast results from cough experts

Most of the health conditions that cause chronic cough are easily diagnosed. But without the required experience and knowledge, the association with coughing can be missed easily. Montefiore’s cough specialists offer our patients the expertise that leads to quick relief.

In many cases, our practiced doctors can identify the source of the problem from the symptoms alone, without diagnostic tests, and can recommend a course of treatment on a patient’s first visit. Those with chronic cough caused by post-nasal drip or asthma often report a remarkable recovery within the first week or two of treatment.

Acid reflux is a more stubborn cough culprit. Several visits may be necessary to determine the best treatment and achieve noticeable results. Patients are also advised of changes in lifestyle and diet that are required for the best outcome.

Central role in research on causes & treatments

As one of the few cough centers in the country, Montefiore is taking a leading role in much of the ongoing research on chronic cough. We participate in studies to understand the mechanisms of coughing and to test more effective forms of cough suppression and cure.
