The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Montefiore Medical Center is dedicated to helping patients improve and maintain their vision. We apply the latest diagnostic and treatment techniques to all manner of vision impairments and abnormalities, including glaucoma, dry eyes, infections, double vision, visual loss and tumors.
Our nationally recognized staff of specialists is one of the largest in the New York area. We combine the expertise of ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists, plastic surgeons, glaucoma surgeons, retina surgeons and pediatric surgeons in a central location for the convenience and benefit of our patients.
At Montefiore, we understand the importance and delicacy of helping our patients cope with eye problemsï¾—and we offer expertise and experience worthy of their complete trust. In addition to our clinical services, we also provide services for low vision and contact lens care.
We offer the best treatments for common ocular conditions and the most up-to-date procedures in all areas of ophthalmology. Nearly all of our surgery is performed on a convenient outpatient basis. We see approximately 35,000 patients each year.
Montefiore uses sophisticated digital imaging and laser treatments to help identify and correct astigmatism, nearsightedness, farsightedness and a multitude of eye disorders. Montefioreï¾’s state-of-the-art facilities enable our staff members to use the latest technological advances in corneal and refractive surgery, corneal transplant surgery, laser surgery and nerve fiber layer analysis.
Our Department is particularly adept at handling the complications inherent in diabetic retinopathy. Our specialists have the proficiency and experience to expertly handle this intricate surgery, including repairing retinal detachments.
Montefiore conducts clinical and scientific research aimed at further improving the field of ophthalmology. At present, our research specialty is in neuroprotection. We analyze how loss of circulation affects nerve tissue damage and are developing treatments that will help protect the nervous system from injury.
In addition, we are working to determine the molecular change that turns a normal lens into a cataract, with the goal of halting or even eradicating this common visual illness in the future. We are also exploring the link between impaired vision and impaired visual memoryï¾—the ability to recall visual images. All of our research efforts are aimed at ultimately providing our patients with better eye care.
Montefiore is a major educational institution in the field of ophthalmology, teaching and training many of the finest ophthalmologists in the New York area and across the country.
