The Division of Head & Neck Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center is dedicated to providing our patients with the very best surgical therapies for trauma, cancer and diseases of the head, neck, throat and oral cavity, including thyroid disease.
Montefiore's international reputation for excellence in head and neck surgery is driven by our commitment to restoring and maintaining the health and well-being of our patients. We are conducting extensive research and clinical trials in all areas of head and neck surgery. Our surgeons are exceptionally skilled individuals working together to ensure patients receive the benefits of the latest knowledge in the field.
We offer comprehensive care from a multidisciplinary team that includes oral and maxillofacial surgeons, neurosurgeons, endocrinologists and plastic surgeons, plus radiotherapists and medical oncologists when required. In addition, our patients have access to superior support services, including speech pathologists and swallowing specialists.
Montefiore uses the newest diagnostic and evaluative techniques to identify disease and pursue the most effective, highly-focused course of treatment available.
Montefiore excels in surgery for diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid, the hormone-regulating glands in the neck. We have the expertise to treat a full array of disorders, using drugs, radiation and surgical intervention.
We have made particular strides in diagnosing and treating diseases of the parathyroid glands, which regulate the amount of calcium in the blood. Montefiore has been instrumental in developing breakthrough scanning methods to identify enlarged parathyroid glands.
In addition, we have perfected minimally invasive surgical techniques to remove the gland. Today, we perform this procedure on more than 80 percent of our parathyroid patients.
Montefiore is a leader in the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of patients suffering from all cancers of the head and neck. We specialize in working with cancers of the oral cavity, larynx (voice box), throat, neck and pharynx (tube leading from the back of the nose to the esophagus and trachea).
Among our notable innovations is a technique called radiofrequency ablation. This process uses heat to decrease the symptoms associated with recurrent tumors after surgery.
We have also pioneered the use of endoscopic surgery to treat cancer of the larynx. Montefiore is one of only a few centers performing this minimally invasive procedure in the New York area.
