Congenital Cardiothoracic Care for Adults

Heart disease in children is generally caused by heart problems that are present at birth. Because children's heart diseases are very different than the diseases adults suffer, adult patients who are living with congenital heart defects or who underwent heart surgery as a child need a pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon who understands the progression of these diseases from infancy to adulthood.

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery's pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Samuel Weinstein is both the director of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore as well as the director of the adult congenital cardiac program.

Adults with congenital heart disease

Adults with congenital heart disease range from patients who have been diagnosed for the first time as adults, adults who are aware of their condition and are seeking follow-up care, and adults who had corrective surgery as children and might need additional procedures because they've outgrown the repairs they received as children.

Dr. Weinstein treats adults suffering from the entire range of conginetal heart problems, including:

As a national and international expert on revisional surgery for adults with congenital heart surgery, Dr. Weinstein and his team of adult and pediatric cardiologists are uniquely qualified to understand the special needs of adult patients who are living with the lifelong effects of congenital heart defects.
