Skin Disorders

At the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Montefiore Medical Center, we are renowned for our specialized treatment of allergic skin disorders, including atopic dermatitis (eczema) and urticaria (hives). Many healthcare professionals only treat the symptoms of allergic skin disorders because they assume little can be done for patients who experience them. We take an aggressive approach to identifying and treating the underlying causes, even those patients are not aware of, including food allergies. By eliminating the source of these skin disorders, we minimize our patients' symptoms as much as possible.

Specialized treatment of skin disorders

Patients often experience skin disorders because of exposure to very common food items that they've eaten for years without incident. These items often include:

• Food additives
• Artificial colorings
• Preservatives
• Spices

Often, when consumed individually, these ingredients don't bother people. But when patients are exposed to several at one time, problems may occur. It can be difficult to perfect treatment, because when patients eliminate a single item, there may be no change in their condition. We are committed to working closely with our patients to create the kind of comprehensive elimination regimen that can recognize the items that are creating problems, one by one, until patients feel a significant improvement in their health.

Commitment to ongoing research

In order to enhance our expertise and the quality of our care, we are involved in a number of ongoing clinical trials of new allergy drugs and research into the treatment of urticaria and atopic dermatitis. We continually recruit patients for our most innovative trial. This involves developing a program for the management of hives that occur two to three times a week, for more than six weeks, and are unresponsive to regular treatment. We have found that our unique approach works much better than the standard method of heavily medicating patients and waiting for symptoms to disappear. Our intensive allergen elimination program involves a highly successful combination of environmental and dietary elimination.

We work very closely with the Division of Dermatology, and they often refer many of their patients with urticaria (hives) or atopic dermatitis (eczema) to us for evaluation and care management.

Such specialized, ground breaking treatment often helps patients suffering from skin disorders to finally become relatively symptom free and experience a vast improvement in their quality of life.
