Asthma

At the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Montefiore Medical Center, we are committed to helping our asthmatic patients become symptom free and achieve the best possible health and quality of life. While other health care professionals often treat only the symptoms of asthma, we take the time to identify and treat the underlying causes. Once we have determined what is contributing to our patients' asthma, we can eliminate the source and, by doing so, minimize their condition as much as possible.

An ongoing history of national leadership

Our expertise in asthma diagnosis and treatment was enhanced by the prominent involvement of our affiliated school, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the National Cooperative Inner-City Asthma Study. We published the ground breaking report on this study, which examined the various causes of asthma in the inner city. In order to continually enhance our expertise and quality of care, we remain involved in a number of clinical trials of new asthma and allergy drugs.

All of our experience and knowledge contributes to the care that we are able to give our asthmatic patients. We have found that our patients respond best when they receive treatment from a specialist, or through a specialist working in conjunction with their primary care doctor, because of the more focused treatment plan that is possible. Such expert asthma therapy can allow asthmatics to become relatively symptom free, and to finally live a healthy, active life.

Unique diagnosis and treatment approach

Our distinctive, multi-step treatment method goes far beyond what most patients' primary care physicians are able to provide. Asthma usually occurs in our patients when they breathe in allergenic substances, particularly while they are sleeping. We counsel them about finding and removing asthma triggers in their homes and sleeping areas.

We then teach our patients how to allergen proof their homes and explain the considerable improvement that can occur from even small changes, such as keeping dogs and cats out of their bedroom while they sleep. We also advise our patients about how to eliminate cockroaches and rodents, when appropriate, and how to successfully eradicate dust mites. We instruct our patients in the benefits of allergen-proof bedding covers. After implementing these changes, patients generally experience a significant improvement in their health.
 
In addition to removing environmental asthma causes, we treat our patients with cutting edge medication. Advances in asthma medication tend to be slow, and many asthmatic patients grow used to taking the same medication for many years, but we ensure that our patients are taking the newest and most effective asthma medications available. When prescribing new medications, we thoroughly explain each one, including its possible side effects. And we are committed to monitoring our patients for such side effects through our thorough follow up care.
