JAMAICA’S FIRST 3D MEDICAL PRINTER DELIVERED BY MONTEFIORE PROVIDES MEDICAL DEVICES AND PROSTHETICS

“WHEN WE STARTED DOING 3D PRINTING THREE YEARS AGO, WE RECOGNIZED THE POTENTIAL TO CREATE BRACES, PROSTHETICS AND MEDICAL EQUIPMENT QUICKLY AND AT A LOW COST FOR COUNTRIES IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD.” — Matthew Bartels, MD, MPH

Montefiore’s Rehabilitation Medicine Department delivered a new 3D printer in July, providing patients in Jamaica easier access to medical devices and prosthetics. The printer produces these items at a fraction of the cost to purchase them from manufacturers.

“When we started doing 3D printing three years ago, we recognized the potential to create braces, prosthetics and medical equipment quickly and at a low cost for countries in the developing world,” says Matthew Bartels, MD, MPH, Professor and Chair, Rehabilitation Medicine, Montefiore and Einstein.

In collaboration with several organizations, including the Zion Care Foundation in the Bronx, the Rehabilitation Department sent fellows to Jamaica’s Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre for the past three years. The first year, mission participants delivered a myoelectric arm, printed at Montefiore, to a grateful amputee. This year, they delivered the 3D printer itself.

Among the first items printed was a tracheotomy cap. “The hospital could not afford to buy the caps, which allow for breathing training in patients with a tracheotomy,” says Dr. Bartels. “We printed one in 30 minutes, providing immediate patient benefit in an extremely resource-limited environment.” The team printed hand splints and daily aids, like pencil holders, for stroke patients, and they plan to guide the physicians in printing prosthetics.

Children with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome may experience problems with the heart, immune system, and swallowing along with physical and cognitive development. In this first year, the number of patients served has doubled.

A group of Bronx children with asthma spent a fantastic week at Camp Spinnaker in New Hampshire in August, thanks to a partnership forged by Montefiore’s Karen Warman, MD, a pediatrician at the Comprehensive Family Care Center pediatric practice, with this special camp. Camp Spinnaker provides a safe, supportive environment where children with asthma can participate in traditional camp activities while learning about their condition and how to manage it. They gain self-confidence, independence, and understanding of how to better respond to their own needs. The fees for ten campers from Montefiore’s pediatric practice were generously underwritten by the Carvel Foundation and the American Lung Association.
