Residency

The residency program at Montefiore Medical Center was established in 1968 as the first pharmacy residency in New York City. The program was later accredited by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists in 1975. The program consists of a one month general orientation, followed by eleven months of learning experiences. There are four residents accepted into the program annually.

The Acute Care component includes learning experiences in cardiology, infectious diseases, critical care medicine, oncology, pediatrics, immunization, inpatient drug distribution and control and investigational drugs.

The Drug Use Policy development component includes experiences in Medication Use Evaluation, Performance Improvement, and Surveillance for Adverse Drug Events and Medication Errors.

Ambulatory Care practice includes HIV, the thrombosis clinic, managed care, and the pharmacy-coordinated disease-state management clinic.

The Practice Management component enables the residents to acquire the skills needed for effective leadership in the profession.

Elective learning experiences are available in pharmacokinetics, oncology, emergency medicine, operating room/anesthesia andd family medicine. Residents serve as primary supervisors for the department on weekends and holidays. A major research project is required for completion of the program.

The Director of the Pharmacy Practice Residency is Mark J. Sinnett, PharmD, FASHP.

The one word that I would use to describe Montefiore Nurses is 'innovative.' They're constantly changing and constantly growing and Montefiore finds new ways to make things easier for the nurses. They embrace change and that is vital for us and the institution. [more]
