Residency

The PGY-1 Residency Program in Pharmacy is an accredited program of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. It was established in 1968 as the first pharmacy residency in New York City, and was later accredited by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists in 1975. The program consists of a one month general orientation, followed by 11 months of learning experiences. Five residents are accepted into the program annually.

The acute care component includes learning experiences in these areas:

  • Cardiology
  • Critical care
  • Family medicine
  • Geriatrics
  • Immunization
  • Infectious diseases
  • Inpatient drug distribution and control
  • Oncology
  • Pediatrics
  • Solid organ transplantation

The practice management component includes experiences in medication use evaluation, performance improvement and surveillance for adverse drug events and medication errors. These studies enable the residents to acquire the skills needed for effective leadership in the profession.

Ambulatory care practice includes managed care and the pharmacy-coordinated disease-state management clinic.

Elective learning experiences are available in pharmacokinetics, oncology, emergency medicine and operating room/anesthesia. Residents serve as primary supervisors for the Department on weekends and holidays. A major research project is required for completion of the program.

The Director of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is Mark J. Sinnett, PharmD, FASHP.
