Residency

The PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Montefiore Medical Center was established in 1968 as the first pharmacy residency in New York City. The program was later accredited by the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists in 1975. The program consists of a one month general orientation, followed by eleven months of learning experiences. There are five residents accepted into the program annually.

The Acute Care component includes learning experiences in cardiology, family medicine, geriatrics, infectious diseases, critical care, oncology, pediatrics, immunization, solid organ transplantation and inpatient drug distribution and control.

The Practice Management component includes experiences in Medication Use Evaluation, Performance Improvement and Surveillance for Adverse Drug Events and Medication Errors. The Practice Management component enables the residents to acquire the skills needed for effective leadership in the profession.

Ambulatory Care practice includes managed care and the pharmacy-coordinated disease-state management clinic.

Elective learning experiences are available in pharmacokinetics, oncology, emergency medicine and operating room/anesthesia. Residents serve as primary supervisors for the department on weekends and holidays. A major research project is required for completion of the program.

The Director of the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is Mark J. Sinnett, PharmD, FASHP.

When I started at Montefiore, I was assigned a mentor, but then all of the nurses in the unit took me under their wings. Everyone was very welcoming. I love working here. [more]
