Residency

The Department of Urology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine offers an intensive, academically-oriented program in clinical and investigative urological surgery. Two residents per year are selected as part of the Residency Matching Program. Two years of general surgery are required to be completed at the Albert Einstein's Department of Surgery prior to beginning the four year urology program.

The first year of urology residency is spent rotating through the adult services at the Montefiore Hospital, Moses Division, the Weiler Division and the Jacobi Medical Center.  All are located in the Bronx. In the second year, the resident spends four months at the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute in Manhattan and eight months in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Urological Research Laboratory. Increasing responsibility is given to the residents during their third and fourth (Chief) years. Residents receive experience in pediatric urology with four month rotations during their third year in the program.

The curriculum includes basic science relevant to urology, urological imaging and pathology and clinical teaching in all areas of urology. A large voluntary faculty participates in this process and  attends regular conferences and journal clubs. Residents are encouraged to participate in research projects and present at local and national meetings.

The class to begin in July 2004 is comprised of two students from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.  Recent graduates of the program have taken fellowships in pediatric urology, oncology and female urology.  Many have entered academia.
