Head and Neck Surgery
Provides comprehensive care to patients with every variety of head & neck cancer, and is a major center for surgical treatment of diseases of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Two full-time hospital-based attending surgeons perform resectional cancer surgery. The service is supported by two plastic surgeons who are both trained in microvascular surgery, one oral/maxillofacial surgeon, a neuro-surgeon and a neuro-otologist. All of these individuals participate, when needed, in the direct operative care of the patients.
Other allied specialty departments and personnel are actively involved in the care of Head & Neck Service patients. These include two radiation oncologists, two medical oncologists, a pathologist, and a speech pathologist. The resources of an active prosthodontic department are available to the head & neck service.
In this way, each patient is offered fully-integrated comprehensive treatment including surgical and non-surgical management of cancer, reconstruction and rehabilitation. Special areas of interest and research include:
-
organ preservation treatment;
-
thyroid and parathyroid surgery;
-
investigation of minimally invasive parathyroid surgery.
