Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders

We offer comprehensive management of all issues arising from spinal cord dysfunction. This service is the first and only one of its kind serving the Bronx and its surround regions.

Inpatient acute rehabilitation as well as follow up care in the outpatient setting is available.  Traumatic and nontraumatic spinal cord injuries, spinal syrinx, tumors, multiple sclerosis, myelopathies from various causes are examples of diagnoses seen.

The inpatient team of dedicated professionals takes care of acute medical and rehabilitative issues and preventive aspects after a devastating life change occurs.

Outpatient services continue the management of medical issues related to spinal cord disorders including bowel and bladder care, spasticity and pain management, and skin care to prevent and treat pressure ulcers.  Fertility and sexual function is also discussed.  Bracing and equipment evaluations are made.  Referrals to other specialties and coordination of care are provided.  Physical and occupational therapy improve function and quality of life.

The spinal cord support group, "The Challengers at Montefiore," meets at regular intervals, is an excellent social support network which deals with issues occurring in the community as well as access and integration to other national and regional organizations.

Dr. Therattil who is a physiatrist trained and board certified in both Rehabilitation Medicine as well as Spinal Cord Medicine heads this service.
