Foot Pain/Footwear and Diabetic Foot Rehabilitation
The Foot Pain/Footwear service provides non-operative care for patients with foot conditions such as overuse injury, rheumatologic, and sports injury. The initial evaluation includes a thorough biomechanical, vascular and neurologic examination. A footwear evaluation such as taping, preparatory orthosis with pad or wedge are offered to patients as needed. There is a wide range of non-operative treatments offered including physical therapy, ultrasound guided injections, preparatory orthosis, taping and unna boot. Patient education in selection of appropriate footwear is an essential part of the service and education is provided by the physician with written instructions.
Diabetic foot provides care for patients with complications such as neuropathic ulcers or charcot foot. This comprehensive care includes screening of vascular status, edema control, choosing the optimal type of wound dressing, correction of faulty biomechanics, patient education and orthotic foot evaluation. Pressure relief and the restoration of normal biomechanics is achieved through multiple measures such as local felt platform dressing, shoe modifications, bracing or assistive devices for ambulation.
