Pediatric Radiology
The ACGME-accredited Pediatric Radiology Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine is a one-year program that provides comprehensive pediatric radiology training in a family-centered environment. One new fellow each year rotates through the Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) - ranked as one of the top children's hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report - and the NICU, located at the Weiler Division. The fellow also teaches radiology residents and participates in conferences and cutting-edge research endeavors.
The goal of the program is for fellows to become proficient in all aspects of pediatric radiology as well as patient care for children, and to embrace the science of investigation. Clinical rotations expose fellows to a wide variety of cases, and our CAQ, fellowship-trained staff supervises each fellow, so that he or she can recommend the appropriate imaging and interpret results for every stage of the various illnesses or abnormalities, while limiting as much excess radiation as possible. Fellows also refine their pediatric care skills by further exploring diseases (i.e. congenital), imaging positioning, and procedures specific to children (i.e voiding cystourethrogram). Intense focus is also given to mastering low-dose radiation, which is also one area of research currently in progress.
Curriculum
The Pediatric Radiology Fellowship curriculum encompasses inpatient and outpatient experience with patients ranging from prenatal to adolescents. Fellows weigh in on multidisciplinary consultations, continue our tradition of strong working relationships with other departments, and are exposed to the full spectrum of radiology modalities including: CT, MRI, radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, angiography, and urography, with access to state-of-the-art technology such as: 1.5 Tesla MRI, 3 Tesla MRI, PEC/CT, angiogram, plain films, urography, spectroscopy, and MR video-compatible goggles that enable kids to watch movies during their MR study. Areas of training include:
- Abdominal imaging
- Chest imaging
- Neuroradiology
- Emergency radiology
- Vascular Interventional radiology
- Oncology
- Musculoskeletal imaging
- Neonatal imaging
In addition to rotations, fellows are responsible for teaching residents and medical students, and attending various conferences such as the GI, hematology, urology, pediatric, and pulmonary conferences. Occasionally fellows will moderate selected discussions.
Fellows must fulfill a research requirement under the supervision of a mentor. Current projects available for participation include: studying the use of low-dose multi-detector CT-slice to identify visceral fat in children, evaluating the role of head CT among children with minor head trauma, and comparing ultrasound and CT to evaluate pulmonary empyemas. Mentors will work closely with fellows in choosing a current or new research endeavor that is best suited to their interests and aspirations. Findings will be presented at a peer-reviewed meeting, and ideally at a national symposium.
