Department of Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy provides a wide range of pharmaceutical services to 3 hospitals and an ambulatory care network. These services include:

  • Satellite pharmacies in Oncology, Critical Care, Pediatrics, Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology and Operating Room
  • Clinical pharmacy services
  • Sterile and non-sterile production
  • Investigational drug service

The Pharmacy is composed of 56 staff pharmacists, 57 pharmacy specialists (technicians), 12 pharmacy interns, 10 support personnel (clerical and stockworkers) and 27 pharmacist managers including 5 executive managers, 9 operational managers, 11 clinical pharmacy managers, and 2 pharmacy residents.

Our department is dedicated to Pharmaceutical Care focused on achieving positive patient outcomes through drug therapy.  This includes:

  • providing high quality pharmaceutical services that foster the efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of drug use;
  • Servicing the needs of our patients and staff by providing drug information for both patients and medical professionals;
  • Educating and training of future pharmacists by promoting teaching internships and residency programs;
  • Involvement in cutting-edge scientific research programs, working to better understand how the human body functions and alleviate human diseases;
  • promoting pharmacy as an essential component of the health-care team.

We offer our pharmacy services to the Moses and Weiler Divisions, the Children's Hospital at Montefiore as well as outpatients and emergency department patients.

  • The New York State Council of Health-system Pharmacists represents New York State pharmacists who practice in ambulatory, long term, managed, home and acute care settings.  There are approximately 2,000 NYSCHP members along with a well-established network of leaders serving on the NYSCHP Board of Directors, NYSCHP committees and chapter officers in the eleven local chapters in NYS.  Current Montefiore leaders have held leadership positions in the Council as well as  other local, state and national pharmacy professional organizations. 


Mission Statement

In alignment with the components of the overall mission of Montefiore Medical Center, the Pharmacy Department has developed patient care, education, research, and community service goals to support the core mission statement.

  1. To advance rational, patient-oriented drug therapy and promote the application of Pharmaceutical Care concepts to contemporary pharmacy practice.
  2. To promote pharmacists as integral members of the health-care team in order to allow full utilization of their clinical and drug use control functions that would be beneficial in the Medical Center. 
  3. To serve as an advocate for advancing professional practice, increasing the cost-effectiveness of pharmaceutical services, and continuously improving the quality of patient care. 
  4. To foster an environment that attracts, retains and motivates superior employees capable of delivering quality, compassionate care efficiently. 
  5. To advocate the pharmacist's value to patients in ensuring that appropriate clinical services and drug use control are applied to their benefit.
  6. To promote good health by fostering the optimal and responsible use of drugs, including prevention of improper or uncontrolled use of drugs.
  7. To promote pride in the quality of services we provide through the application of Continuous Quality Improvement and Total Quality Management techniques.
  8. To facilitate information exchange between pharmacists and patients as well as other members of the health-care team.
  9. To maintain exceptional continuing educational programs for pharmacy practitioners, and encourage involvement in continuing education activities outside of the department and institution.
  10. To assure sufficient, competent manpower in the profession by offering high quality undergraduate education and pharmacy residency training programs.  
  11. To facilitate research in health and pharmaceutical sciences and services to enable the Pharmacy to keep abreast of the latest and most effective means of delivering drugs to patients.
  12. To provide leadership in the identification, analysis, and evaluation of health-care trends and in the development of public policy and to participate in the formulation and evaluation of legislative and regulatory initiatives of concern to pharmacy.
