Division of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine

The Division of Clinical Pathology is responsible for the laboratory testing of blood, urine, and body fluids for disease diagnosis and health maintenance. The Division is comprised of 10 Laboratory Units, each headed by a specialist who provides for skilled management, provision of he newest and most accurate tests, and expert clinical consultation.

Utilizing the latest advances in computer technology, the Division maintains millions of dollars of state-of-the-art automated equipment at its laboratory sites at the Moses and Einstein campuses and services hospitals, nursing homes, the Montefiore Medical Group, faculty practices, and voluntary physicians’ offices at more than 40 sites. The majority of these sites are linked to the core laboratory through the Montefiore Clinical Information System. A wide array of point of care equipment is also available to bring specimen testing directly to the bedside, the operating rooms, and the intensive care units.

The laboratories perform more than 2500 different tests. Dr. Ira Sussman is responsible for laboratory operations and is Director of the Moses laboratories. Dr. Tylis Chang is Director of the Weiler laboratory.

World Renowned Leadership
The Division is unique among other medical centers in that it derives its strength from both its leadership and the depth of knowledge of its individual section heads and Associate Directors. Each of these individuals is a leader in his or her respective field and many are actively engaged in research that leads to a better understanding of disease processes or laboratory procedures.

Dr. Ira Sussman, Vice-Chairman, is an internationally recognized investigator and expert in bleeding disorders who publishes extensively on the mechanisms of hereditary and acquired bleeding problems.

Dr. Jacob Rand is an internationally acclaimed expert in women’s health. An NIH funded researcher and one of New York’s “best physicians”, he is known for his groundbreaking research into the mechanism of fetal loss in the Antiphospholipid Syndrome.

Dr. John McKitrick serves as a consultant in microbiology to numerous hospitals and companies seeking to expand the technology of microbiologic diagnosis.

Dr. Martin Surks is one of this country’s preeminent specialists in thyroid disease and serves on many national panels that decide the standards for management of endocrinologic disorders.

Dr. Peter Barland is a key figure in the American Rheumatologic Association and has defined in his publications the diagnostic testing criteria for arthritic disease for this country’s practitioners.
