North Division Internal Medicine Residency Program Overview

The North Division of Montefiore Medical Center (formerly Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center) provides inpatient and outpatient primary and consultative care for communities of the Bronx.  In an academic environment, primary care training is offered in internal medicine and several of its subspecialties.  The residency program in internal medicine is linked to a community rich in ethnic and socioeconomic diversity.

The philosophy of the training program is to present a highly organized and closely supervised education program. The guiding teaching methodology is the integration of didactic subject matter into the daily delivery of inpatient and ambulatory healthcare to patients.  The program's goal is to produce high-quality graduates who will provide compassionate and humanistic care to patients in academic or private practice settings.

The North Division of Montefiore Medical Center is a center of academic excellence. As a  teaching hospital, we have second, third and fourth year students rotating through our medical floors, enhancing the residency experience. We have strong division chiefs in every subspecialty of medicine, who are interested in teaching and training enthusiastic, bright young physicians. We are especially proud of our Cancer Program and our Divisions of Geriatrics, Gastroenterology, Nephrology and Cardiology and their fellowship programs.

Curriculum

The three-year residency is geared to provide a very strong foundation in clinical, academic and social aspects of medicine. We are dedicated to providing a comprehensive curriculum to all medicine residents. Our well-rounded program includes an excellent clinical and research experience, didactic lectures, sessions in performance improvement, risk management, advance directives, infection control, microbiology, pharmacology, morbidity and mortality conferences and essential clinical laboratory procedures. Teaching is offered by physicians, ethicists and other qualified personnel.

Conferences, Lectures, Didactics

A comprehensive conference schedule enhances the educational program. Many seminars, conferences and lectures bring residents into close contact and consultation with a variety of disciplines, including the basic sciences. Core lectures in non-internal medicine specialties are also offered.

Our program is dedicated to excellence, with a strong emphasis on primary care that is continuous, cost effective and high quality.

Board Review (Annual)

A comprehensive Annual Internal Medicine Board Review is offered to all residents in the last few months of the academic year.

Research and Publications, Performance Improvement

Residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research projects with knowledgeable faculty members. An annual research day provides opportunity for research presentations by residents.  Certificates and awards are offered for meritorious projects.  Abstracts are routinely submitted for presentation in intramural, state, national or international meetings.  Prizes have been won by our trainees in several meetings. Publications are prepared with the help of faculty members for submission to peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Participation in performance improvement activities is a requirement for all residents.

Resources and Facilities

We are a large teaching medical center, providing state-of-the-art care at a hospital in the beautiful northwest Bronx, New York, with outpatient ambulatory care provided at a brand-new facility across the street from the hospital.  Each resident is assigned a panel of patients, who are followed through the course of the residency, thus preserving continuity of care throughout the ambulatory experience.

We specialize in treating a broad spectrum of disease and provide comprehensive care to all patients, ranging from the relatively healthy to the critically ill.  We are in full compliance with all ACGME requirements and received accreditation. Our ABIM Exam pass rate has been excellent for several years, either at or approaching 100%.

The division includes 35 full-time or part-time attending physicians, as well as many other voluntary physicians who participate in our teaching program.  Many dedicated nurses, social workers, case managers, grant staff and ancillary personnel complete the full array of the Department of Medicine's services.
